Abstract:
Arsenite was methylated by Me3SPF6 when the reaction was carried out at pH 12 and 80C, but not at pH 6.0-6.5 and 25 oC. The product was Me3AsO, which could be reduced to Me3As when made acid with H2SO4 and treated with SO2. Hence, these reactions modeled the biological methylation of As which had been proposed to involve successive oxidative methylation and reduction steps. However, attempts to confirm the mechanism in kinetic studies of formation of MeAsO3- from Me3SPF6 and arsenite were unsuccessful.
