Catalytic Decarbonylation of Aldehydes Using Ruthenium(II) Porphyrin Systems

RCHO (R = aryl, alkyl, cycloalkyl) were decarbonylated by LRu(PPh3)2 (I; L = tetraphenylporphyrin) under ambient conditions. E.g., decarbonylation of PhCH2CHO by a catalytic amount of I (MeCN or PhCN, under Ar approximately 50 oC, 4 h) gave 90% conversion to a product assaying 95% PhMe.
