Abstract:
A series of water-soluble Fe and Mn metalloporphyrins are shown to be good models of ligninase catalysis. Using a wide variety of oxidants (including H2O2, alkylhydrogen peroxides, hypochlorite, periodate, and iodosyl benzenes), veratryl alcohol and lignin model compounds are demonstrated to undergo reactions paralleling those seen with the enzymes. This information is preceded by a review on previous results from modeling heme-containing enzymes.
